• the ceolc (compassionate end of life care) initiative is at a powerful turning point, into our next phase.it is amazing what we have done in such a short time, with extraordinary results.
• the prison work is over-blooming and particularly the work in the juvenile detention center, where the director came here to let us know that we have to expand our work there! and he wants to do research on the work we are doing "inside", as does richie davidson.
• the path of service/upaya college now has a detailed and amazing proposal that will make it possible for us to educate people in valued-based leadership in many important areas of our lives, from service work to institutions engaged in political and social change
• we have a great team working on the development of the master plan for the campus, and i am thrilled with our future plans for building. we have outgrown everything and are now renting spaces off campus to handle the overflow....
• roshi and the executive director still need assistants to help us move forward. we are working on so many fronts but are not at maximum capacity because we have not had the time to hire our own support teams, ironically!
• marketing is in rapid development and we are moving forward on this in a big way with a new website, web registration, new look, new stationary, new logo and the rest, and much new outreach. thanks canton and michael motley
• daily practice, priest training, training of lay people (including chris howson who will receive jukai in august with many others), the training of young people is very strong here. we have great teachers in the making and an ever-expanding program and resident population.
• buddhist chaplaincy training: we are offering beginning next year a two year training program in buddhist chaplaincy to work with dying people and in prisons. this is religious training, and is different than our non-sectarian training which does not authorize people as chaplains.
• mentoring and training young people; through jisen and john, the program for young people is growing importantly with youth from santa fe prep learning and serving here. we have more calls to expand our services to youth, and this is a big agenda item up ahead
• our new vice abbot-to-be arrives in july to take over buddhist training and support of our residents
• john has assembled a powerful fundraising team to move our work forward with the great heart of generosity guiding us.
as you can see, our cup runneth over..... and your help with all this is so important. i feel that upaya exemplifies the application of contemplative strategies to the work in social service in a way that no other institution in the country does. i am grateful, so very grateful
